Microsoft, as part of their Patch Tuesday updates, have released some security changes to how Remote Desktop (RDP) connections function.

Previously, if you had a saved RDP connection to a server or another computer etc you could click into it to connect, type your login details and it would then work.

Microsoft have had problems with hackers exploiting RDP so they have now included a couple of extra prompts to prevent unauthorised access to local resources like printers, drives etc.

The first prompt looks like this (this is 1 time only):

This is asking you to confirm you know a connection to another machine may pose a risk and that you accept it.

Once accepted, you will see the next prompt – similar to this:

The intention of it is to try and restrict how many devices on your own machine the connection can access.

Before the update, you could have the connection pre-saved on your desktop with access to printers and drives from your machine so that every time you clicked on it, you could use these.

You will now have to select that you want access to these before connecting by ticking the relevant boxes and clicking “Connect”.

Often you may need to select Printers, Clipboard and even Drives

.. this will be required EVERY time you connect
